Our Medical Elective Programme provides medical students with an opportunity to gain practical exposure to the Sri Lankan healthcare system. Through placements in selected departments at government hospitals, students can observe local consultants, doctors, and nursing teams while developing their clinical knowledge and experiencing healthcare practices in a diverse medical environment.
ELECTIVE TRACKS
Shadow doctors on ward rounds and in clinics across General Medicine, General Surgery, Neuro Surgery, the Emergency Treatment Unit, Paediatrics, Eye and Psychiatry.
Join ward nursing teams across Outpatients, the Emergency Treatment Unit and general medical and surgical wards.
Work with the rehabilitation team on inpatient wards and outpatient clinics, covering musculoskeletal, neurological and respiratory cases.
Observe imaging across X-ray, ultrasound and CT, and see how a busy government hospital manages diagnostic imaging with limited resources.
Spend time in the hospital dispensary and on ward rounds, learning how medicines are supplied, prepared and managed across the hospital.
Support patients working towards daily-living independence alongside the OT team, spanning physical rehabilitation and mental health settings.
Observe the dental unit's clinics, from routine extractions and restorations to oral surgery and community dental outreach.

Open to medical, nursing, physiotherapy, radiography, pharmacy, occupational therapy and dentistry students looking to complete an elective placement outside their home country, at any stage that their university programme allows.
